Is it just me or are most nude lipsticks not meant for darker skin tones? On darker skin tones, nude lipsticks come out looking ashy, dry and straight up unattractive. So what’s a girl to do if she wants to sport a nude look?
The first step is to ditch nude lipsticks entirely and look for brown shades that color match your skin’s natural tone. Sounds easy, right? Well, we’re about to make it even easier with these “nude” lipsticks that are perfect for our dark skinned beauty lovers.

Pink Lipstick For Dark Skin
The concept of 'nude' make-up is problematic at the best of times. What looks perfectly peachy on one skin tone looks pasty on another, and that's before we even get started on the difference between nudes for black women and for white. Here, Funmi Fetto details her own quest for the perfect nude lipstick, discovers the best shades for dark skin and speaks to the experts about avoiding the most common pitfalls. My journey began as a teen beguiled by Brigitte Bardot. When a 13-year-old black girl considers pictures of a Fifties French actress - with her Caucasian skin, trademark kohl-rimmed eyes and salmon-pink lips - a blueprint for finding the perfect nude lipstick, false start doesn’t even begin to qualify it. Putting the misplaced sense of skin tone to one side, the idea of the perfect nude lipstick is actually something of a misnomer. According to the Oxford Dictionary, the word “nude” denotes make-up that is “a colour resembling that of the wearer’s skin”. There is nothing remotely perfect about wearing a lipstick that matches one’s skin tone. At best you will look like you are wearing concealer on your lips. At worst? You’ll look dead. Secondly, no two nudes are the same - particularly so when comparing a nude for fairer tones with something that won’t look frightful on black skin. The one-size-fits-all mantra does not apply in this respect, which is why “flesh-toned” underwear is particularly grating for black women. Also, surely no healthy human being is the colour of Spanx. Still, while the idea of the so-called perfect nude is essentially a myth, it doesn’t stop us hankering after it; blame it on Bardot. And so after years of many trials and even more disasters – (photographs revealed my “perfect” pink nude a la Bardot looked like I’d painted my lips in Dulux Off White) here is what else I’ve discovered in my quest to find the ultimate nude lipstick. The perfect nude is relative “Your perfect nude”, says Hannah Martin, senior pro artist at Bobbi Brown, “doesn't necessarily mean that white-based beige colour”. Or the hue of a restrained Pepto-Bismol. The conventional concept of “nude”, despite the trusty Oxford Dictionary still referring to it as “something of a pinky beige colour” is no longer relevant. These days, one woman’s nude is another woman’s beige, caramel, brown, pink, peach and even, rather curiously, a mauve or pale orange. A nude is simply a shade that is muted, understated and resembles, in a perfect world, what you’d want your natural lips to look like; on that day at least. The original colour of your lips is everything Many black women have lips that are quite deeply pigmented, so very dark, or even completely different colours; dark brown on top, pink at the bottom. This completely alters the tone of your choice of lipstick. However Cher Webb, MAC senior artist, advises that you needn’t go to the trouble of finding two separate hues to compensate. “If you want to lighten, darken or even out your lip shade, try blending some concealer over your lips before lipstick application. This neutralises the tones, leaving an even canvas to work on.” Katrese Kirk, national training manager at Fashion Fair Cosmetics also suggests this trick as a way to tone down overly pink options. “Many nudes on the market can be too pink for darker skin tones. Using concealer, foundation or powder on your lips before you apply your lipstick acts as a base to give you a more natural finish.' Trial and error is necessary Experts will say your choice of nude lipstick should be based on whether you have blue, yellow or red undertones, but the truth is most people have no idea what that means. The real key to finding the perfect nude is simply to try them on. It’s a painstaking task but it is the only way; particularly for darker skin tones as this area of make-up for black skin is still a work in progress. The back of the hand won’t provide a realistic result and neither will merely looking at the lipstick bullets. Rather than forking out for numerous colours it is worth heading to beauty counters so that a consultant can actually try colours on your lips. Laura Mercier, Hourglass, Nars and Tom Ford are good bets; many of the teams on these counters are well-versed in how to work with darker skin tones. Darker isn’t necessarily better To avoid an ashy lip situation, the temptation is to stick to nudes that veer towards dark browns. Webb argues that there is no need to avoid pale shades altogether. “To opt for a lighter nude (such as a salmon pink) and to prevent any ashiness, try drawing your lip pencil all over your lips and then applying your lipstick on top. The lip pencil base will intensify your lipstick colour and also balance your natural lip shade.' And if you find a lipstick too opaque and therefore too much of a commitment, glosses are a good entry level. Whatever the case, anything biscuit-y or beige is best avoided. As with any lipsticks with too much white in them, they tend to look ashy, flat and basically ridiculous on dark skin. Balance is key Nude lips against dark skin will look out of synch, stark and - well - a bit too nude, if the rest of the face is devoid of make-up. Definition of sorts, be it a winged eye or strong brows, is necessary. And that’s one cue, regardless of skin tone, we can definitely take from Bardot.
